While exploring nature on foot, it’s typical to witness various fauna carrying out their daily routines. If you’re fortunate enough, you might even catch a glimpse of an uncommon creature lurking nearby the path. Nevertheless, encountering a mother dog left behind and with child would definitely be an unexpected sight.
Regrettably, a couple stumbled upon a pitiful sight while trekking. However, the timing was perfect. A dog was in labor, and the couple witnessed it firsthand. The mother, a timid pit bull, was malnourished and utterly worn-out. She didn’t confide in anyone. But Thom McCallum was resolute in providing her with a brighter future.
Thom brought mama dog and her three little pups to his place and showed them around their new home. The puppies were incredibly small and could hardly see. Thom had a big task ahead of him taking care of them.
Thom gave his new furry companion the name Ruby, but it wasn’t an instant connection between them. It took some time for her to trust him as her new owner. Her past experiences were unknown, but it’s possible that being left behind by her previous caregiver made her hesitant to trust humans again.
Regardless of her own anxieties, the mother remained dedicated to fulfilling her parental responsibilities. She performed admirably in caring for her young offspring, who slept soundly for the majority of their initial weeks of existence.
During the puppies’ nap time, Thom took advantage of the opportunity to spend some quality time with Ruby and establish a closer connection with her. He caressed her fur, spoke softly to her to make her feel at ease, and attempted to engage her in playtime, even though she was still hesitant to participate in a game of fetch.
Thom had been a foster parent for 20 days when Ruby’s litter of puppies finally became mobile and started running around. With the addition of three active little pups, Thom knew he had his work cut out for him. Soon enough, it was time for their first walk. Thom secured the puppies in a cute little cart and Ruby walked alongside them, keeping watch. Along the way, Thom couldn’t help but draw attention from passersby who couldn’t resist the adorable sight of a “wagon full of puppies”.
Thom was confident that his furry companions were prepared to enjoy some outdoor fun in his yard. Mama Ruby had always been fond of nature, but now she seemed more interested in sticking close to Thom. Previously reserved, she had become his staunch supporter.
Thom disclosed, “Ruby tags along wherever I go and never leaves my side.”
With time, the puppies matured, and so did Ruby – in terms of self-assurance. Thom was thrilled to witness her transformation.
Thom’s latest update featured some great news – all three little canines found their forever homes! Interestingly, one of the puppies, Tito, was adopted by Thom’s neighbor who even went the extra mile and set up a gate on his back fence. This way, Tito’s mom could still visit her son whenever she pleased.
According to Thom, Ruby has already found her forever home with him. He has decided to take care of the courageous mom for the rest of his life. He also mentioned that he thinks Ruby doesn’t need to go anywhere else because she’s happy where she is. Thom loves spending time with her and believes that he is the perfect person to provide a home for her.
Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I highly recommend fostering and putting in your all for whoever comes to stay with you. It’s a life-changing experience that could lead to you forming an unbreakable bond with one of them, just as I did. They’ll become a permanent fixture in your life and the memories you create with your newfound best friend will be priceless. My advice? Allow yourself to fall head over heels in love and let it consume you completely. We could all learn a thing or two from their ability to love unconditionally.
